72-hour pause before you decide about your job

A short guide to not turning a bad hour into a big decision.

Who this is for

For when you're about to quit, send a strong message, take any way out, or promise yourself you'll just push through, even though something is already too heavy.

Moment

The decision shows up on a heavy day, not after looking at the whole picture.

Risk

Mistaking a necessary reaction for a decision that's actually ready.

Way out

Wait 72 hours and write a short note before you move.

Simple rule

Don't make a big decision at the exact moment everything feels unbearable.

If there's no immediate risk to your safety, your health, or your integrity, give yourself 72 hours. Not to ignore what you're feeling. To listen to it with less noise.

The 72 hours
Day 1

Lower the intensity.

Don't send the message, don't promise anything, and don't close a decision today. Eat something, sleep if you can, take a ten-minute walk, or step away from the screen.

Write: What weighs on me most today is... What I want to do right now is... What I can put off for 24 hours is...
Day 2

Separate facts from stories.

Split a note into two columns. In one, write what you actually saw or heard. In the other, write what you're assuming about it.

Facts I saw or heard: Stories I'm telling myself about those facts:
Day 3

Choose a 30-minute action.

The pause doesn't have to end in a huge decision. It can end in a small action.

  • Ask for a 20-minute conversation.
  • Write the message, but don't send it yet.
  • Go over an offer with someone who won't pressure you.

Traffic light

This pause isn't meant to help you put up with what's hurting you.

Red

If there's abuse, harassment, threats, repeated humiliation, or a situation that's breaking you, seek support and put your safety first. This pause is not a substitute for that.

Yellow

If there's high exhaustion, anger, pressure, or the urge to run, use the 72 hours to lower the noise before you decide.

Green

If the question is still alive after 72 hours, this is no longer just a bad hour. It's worth getting a clearer read on what kind of transition you're actually living.

If the question is still alive, take the Quick Map.

It gives you a first personal read and a blank worksheet to organize what's happening, in your own words.
